Happy 54th birthday Singapore!
2019. Bicentennial no less. 200 years since Sir Stamford Raffles landed in Singapore.
Where better to spend this national day, the Malay Heritage centre!
Today the Malay Heritage Centre has been taken over the young people from River Valley High. Hubby is an alumni, so naturally he was very interested. plus i have always wanted to visit the Malay Heritage Centre.
There were 5 stations manned by the students. Activities galore! There was Kueh Bangkit making, with gloves, flour, food coloring and mold on the outdoor lawn. Batter trade and mystery puzzle of Malay costume on the 1st floor. Gendat and wayang kulit making on the ground floor. Close to our hearts since we visited Bali in June.
I must commend the efforts of these young secondary two River Valley student. They did very well explaining the different stations. The rules of the game for the price trading station. Very engaging and attentive at both the kueh bang kit and wayang kulit station, always ready with the scotch tape.
An amusing incident happened when we were at the spice trading station. A middle age visitor approached the students behind the trading game station and asked if they had a dustbin for her to throw the half eaten sweet on her outstretched palm. They didnt have a dustbin, and seemingly not wanting to disappoint her, one boy bravely stretched out his palm and say “ah just put it here” While another student stared with disbelief and a candid, “no yuck” i couldn’t contain my laughter and burst out laughter on the innocence of these young students, the sweetness in these boys. While the boy who ended up with the sticky sweet on his palm stood lost not knowing what to do until i managed to contain my laughter and told him to go to the toilet to throw it out and wash his hands which he dutifully did.
We finished all the stations , i had a ball coloring my wayang kulit princess while my boys did their heros and under their instructions, hubby did the villain’s. After which we were able to collect our prize for the day , NDP Fun packs! The boys were thrilled.
We finished up with lunch at Kampong Glam cafe. Delicious Nasi padang, nadi lemak and mee siam while the mosque prayers call rang throughout the streets.
Of course we really ended the day back home, after the boys had their time with lego in their playroom while Hubby and i caught up with our sleep.
We watched the national parade on television. Little Crispin kept asking when the flyby was coming. We all stood at attention when the national anthem came on. Little Crispin and little pea sang loudly. They have been practicing in school.
It is a good day indeed.
Happy birthday again Singapore.
